TU Professor Authors Second Textbook

TIFFIN UNIVERSITY, Tiffin, OH— Tiffin University Professor (School of Business) Dr. Bonnie Tiell authored her second textbook, “Governance in Sport: Analysis and Application.” Her publication will be available on February 15, 2020, by Human Kinetics, a leading publisher of textbooks and journals in physical activity and sport management. Dr. Tiell serves as editor and Kerri Cebula, Kutztown University in Pennsylvania is a co-author.

“Governance in Sport” examines ethical behavior, leadership, decision making and policy development in organizations at the local, state, national, regional and global levels. Chapters address governance in professional sport; amateur sport; sports media; sporting goods and licensing; sports marketing; esports; fitness, wellness and health; and the sports wagering industry. Case studies scrutinize contemporary issues such as the NCAA college basketball and Varsity Blue’s corruption scandals, the NFL kneeling policy, Olympic host city selection policies, the impact of political boundaries in refusing to compete in international tournaments and poaching in esports.

The unique feature of Dr. Tiell’s textbook is the vast experience of practitioners. Several contributors have local connections to Tiffin and Tiffin University, including Dr. Michael Kidd and Steve Borawski who co-authored a chapter on the governance of esports, and Jake Ward and Chloe Goodlive of Ward Law Office, LLC who co-authored a case study exploring a copyright infringement lawsuit in the NBA. Other contributors include the former head coach for the USA men’s national handball team; former directors for the NBA Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs, NFL Miami Dolphins, MLB New York Mets and NHL Columbus Blue Jackets; professors whose private consulting clients included Premier League Football, Formula One Racing and the International Committee of Asian Triathlon Committee; a world-class sailor; three Olympians; a board member for the USA Artistic Swimming; and volunteer coordinators for the 2018 Rugby-seven World Championships, 2019 college football national championship and 2020 Super Bowl.

“I still can't believe an acquisition editor from Human Kinetics sought me out to write this book on sports governance,” said Dr. Bonnie Tiell. “Human Kinetics is considered a giant in the publishing field for sport, recreation, and physical activity. I could never have produced such a high-quality product without the contributions of experienced authors and sport practitioners who added a wealth of research and real-life perspectives.”

Dr. Tiell is the founder of the Academic Experience with Olympians and will be traveling to Tokyo this summer for her fifth Olympic Games to lead a delegation representing the United States, Africa, and Central America. This is also the fifth consecutive year Dr. Tiell will represent the United States Sports Academy’s (USSA) sports administration program by lecturing on international sports governance in Bangkok, Thailand.
