On July 8th, a New York author is to visit the Seneca County Museum to present a special program about a Civil War infantry group featuring many men from the Tiffin area.

In 2019, Barry wrote "No Flinching From Fire: The 65th New York Volunteer Infantry in the American Civil War.” On Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Seneca County Museum, Barry will present a program about the book. The program is titled “'Ordinary' Men in Extraordinary Circumstances: the Officers and Men of Tiffin in the 65th New York Volunteer Infantry.”

Barry said Company K of the 65th New York Volunteer Infantry was largely raised in Tiffin.

“Tiffin men like Lafayette Burns, Charley Crockett and Thomas Higgenbotham saw much of the war, and they gave their lives fighting in it,” he said. “Their letters back home tell a compelling story of life in the Union Army.”

His interest in the 65th NY began when he researched his great-great grandfather’s role in the regiment.

The 65th saw action in most of the key battles fought by the Army of the Potomac in the Civil War. The regiment fought at Fair Oaks/Seven Pines, Malvern Hill and Fredericksburg in 1862.

Irvington High School Teacher Chris Barry has taught history for the past 32 years. He has a bachelor's degree in Government from Hamilton College, and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in Social Studies from Wesleyan University.

Seneca County Museum Director Theresa Sullivan said she is excited to learn more about the topic.

“Mr. Barry wrote this amazing book and has a great story to tell that just so happens to tie into our local history,” she said. “We hope that the community will give him a warm welcome for this special program.”

The public is encouraged to attend and hear the presentation at the Seneca County Museum, 28 Clay St. Books are to be sold at the museum. The program is free, but there will be a donation box.
