Calvert Catholic Schools Celebrates Dedication of Upgrades to "Zip" Zalar Field

The Chamber team and ambassadors joined Nick Palm, Karl "Zip" Zalar's family, and members of the Calvert Catholic Schools family to celebrate the dedication of the upgrades made to “Zip” Zalar Field.

Nick Palm, a standout individual on the field (first team All-Ohio in 2022) and off the field, chose to renovate “Zip” Zalar Field as part of his senior year class project. Nick, with the assistance of his grandfather, Fred Shelt, and others, completely renovated the backstop of the field and added netting to the backstop and dugouts. With Nick’s passion for baseball and their family’s life-long friendship with the Zalar family, it made this project an obvious choice for him to upgrade Zip Zalar field.

Karl “Zip” Zalar began teaching at Tiffin Calvert High School after serving our country. He enjoyed a fruitful career of 45 years coaching football, basketball, baseball, and golf while also serving as athletic director. His talents to build athletic programs and gain the respect of his athletes proved a trademark for “Zip”. His athletic teams during those 45 years won over 65 percent of their contests which included numerous championships.

There will be a plaque that honors the donors that helped make this project possible through the funding of $35,000 from donations, gifts in kind and time.
